From site:

"I am Tom Barrett and this is my professional blog, a space that will act as a sounding board for my ideas and thoughts on using ICT in my classroom.

I am currently working in a large primary and nursery school in north  Nottinghamshire, England - Robin Hood country!

Year 6 is the class that I am teaching (Grade 5/6) and I thoroughly enjoy the challenge."

TeacherSource | learning.now | PBS

Andy Carvin has a new blog on PBS. Below is his introduction to his blog from an email through the Digital Divide Network.

Link: TeacherSource | learning.now | PBS.

"The blog, which I'll be writing and editing for PBS Online, will focus
on the intersection of Internet culture and K-12 education. One of the
primary goals is to help guide educators through the ins and outs of
what's often referred to as "Web 2.0," including blogging, podcasting,
vlogging, RSS, social software and community networks. I'm planning to
explore some of the creative ways students and teachers are using
interactive technologies to improve learning, as well as dissect the
controversies that often occur when classroom culture and online culture
collide.

The website officially kicks off Tuesday, but I wanted to give you a
sneak preview of the site. And please feel free to offer any suggestions
on the types of subjects you'd like me to tackle on the blog. I'm hoping
this will be an engaging discussion in which I can learn from all of you
and share some of the exciting work that's going on in classrooms today."

MoveOn.org Civic Action: Democracy in Action

Support an open and free internet. Sign the online petition and pass it on. Click on the link below. Say no to corporate greed and arrogance.

Link: MoveOn.org Civic Action: Democracy in Action.

Do you buy books online, use Google, or download to an Ipod? These activities, plus MoveOn's online organizing ability, will be hurt if Congress passes a radical law that gives giant corporations more control over the Internet.

Internet providers like AT&T and Verizon are lobbying Congress hard to gut Network Neutrality, the Internet's First Amendment. Net Neutrality prevents AT&T from choosing which websites open most easily for you based on which site pays AT&T more. Amazon doesn't have to outbid Barnes & Noble for the right to work more properly on your computer.

If Net Neutrality is gutted, MoveOn either pays protection money to dominant Internet providers or risks that online activism tools don't work for members. Amazon and Google either pay protection money or risk that their websites process slowly on your computer. That why these high-tech pioneers are joining the fight to protect Network Neutrality[1]--and you can do your part today.

The free and open Internet is under seige--can you sign this petition letting your member of Congress know you support preserving Network Neutrality? Click here:

A principal of a french school is in big trouble because his blog

It has been a long time since my last post here... I have quit my job as principal to become a full time blogvangelist... I want to make it clear : I am fine, everything is great for me and I can't be more happy than I am at Opossum, the company I founded with colleagues met during my experiments of blogging when I was principal @ Institut St-Joseph.

I contact you today because there is an event in France that you should take a look. A principal of a technical school in Lozere, France, has been dismissed after discovery of his anonymously-written blog, which was deemed obscene and pornographic. There was nothing oscene or pornographic on the blog who was shut down few times ago. This English post from a french blogger, «Garfielddgate» (Garfieldd is the nickname of the principal), can resume the whole thing. Since I went in the field, I spent some good time in France (three stays) and I made lots of contact there... The network is solid and the french blogosphere reacted a lot as you can see there. Lots of paper in national press was published following the decision and reported that all bloggers support the principal even if he made mistakes in his approach of blogging. We simply argued that the punishment (he loosed all his privileges and rent) was far disproportionate when we consider the real facts...

Yesterday, in a press release, the Minister of Education got back a bit on his decision. This is the beginning of something important maybe on this other side of sea in the context of ICT integration in learning because the focus will be more on blogs and ICT-education this week to come. If you can give some support to the french community in a comment on this post, I am sure that it will be appreciate... The fact is that billions of students is blogging anonymously in France and my point is that the principal can do more now for integration of ICT in school than ever; I think he realised lots of thing and he can now testified on blogging in school of education with a rich experience... The decision to fired him was a error and we want to continue to put pressure on authorities to serve the student's needs rather than make more silence in school system... Anyway, you are able to make your own opinion on this issue and do the best you think.

Thanks a lot folks. I realised that I didn't give you enought news this autumn about my work and I will try to do more in next months...

HTML Version RSF Handbook for Bloggers And Cyber-Dissidents now online
Browse it here in one file:

http://thewall.civiblog.org/rsf/

I have just completed and released an all-in-one html version of Reporters Without Borders Handbook for Bloggers and Cyber-Dissidents; browse at the above location. I tried to keep the spirit and flavor of RSF's pdf version as much as possible, while adding additional sources and art. It is about 8mb, so will take a couple of minutes over dialup to load, but should be just great over broadband connections.

The release notes and download page for a local copy is here:

http://thewall.civiblog.org/rsf/ReleaseNotes_HBCD_110205.html

In addition to the Handbook, there are a couple of other files there for download as well.

http://thewall.civiblog.org/cdcp.zip tells the story of how the story of China's blocking of all Typepad-hosted weblogs in March 2004 reach the world press after spreading throughout the Blogosphere; and another file includes a collection of spinning orb and throbbing herald gif animations created for this html version, and released under the GPL.

Only the Civiblog site is completely set up so far.

I actively solicit feedback on ways to improve this document, and welcome any and all comments, criticisms, corrections, rants, etc.

I hope you enjoy it.

Cheers,

- David C. Manchester
