Schools Matter

This space will explore issues in public education policy; and it will advocate for a commitment to and a re-examination of the democratic purposes of schools. If there is some urgency in the message, it is due to the current reform efforts that are based on a radical re-invention of education, now spearheaded by a psychometric blitzkrieg of "metastasized testing" aimed at dismantling a public education system that took almost 200 years to build.

A blog on technology from RSS to collaborative weblogs

July 04, 2004

Hello!
I would like to say that my dissertation will be presented in july, 22. It is the end of a process to which I dedicated myself in the last two years.
My work is inserted in the point of intersection among education, work and technology. Starting from the question: Does the interaction among researcher-educators in the elaboration and development of their projects contribute to constitute communities of researchers and to build alternatives for the education of author and autonomous teachers working with computer educational technologies?
Its goal is to investigate the constitution and development of researchers' communities, identifying and
analyzing the contractitions in this process in order to take part in forming alternatives for teacher education.
The project uses weblogs as learning environments for considering that their dynamic open and public format can be a distinguishing factor to the survey. That is a qualitative research characterized as a critical action-research.
I believe that it is the first work on weblogs in this level, in Brazil. Thus, I would like to invite you to know the blogs of the project:
My personal blog - Onde anda Su?
The collaborative blog - [zaptlogs]
The research blog - [bloglab]
and two of the projects created:
Relendo Clássicos - a collaborative weblogs used in a class of Rio Grande do Sul Federal University
Prática Educativa em Saúde - a collaborative weblog to discuss the educational aspects of medicine in the Faculdade de Medicina da UFRGS.
:: all blogs are in portuguese. Now, I hope I can participate more of this blog, talking about weblogs and education and giving the point of view of Brasil. Thanks, Alberto :)

ModBlog - filament

ModBlog - filament

Filament is the academic blog of Emily, who teaches English at a community college on Long Island.

I've moved here from the old filament on Blogger, because I like Modblog better. This is a blog about academic issues and my own experiences as a community college teacher. My experience today has been avoiding the huge pile of grading I should be doing in order to fool around with my blogs.

Comment: A 100 percent modblog. This should be interesting. It is not the first by a edblogger but usually this type of blog is an alternative option or secondary blog. Here it takes the main stage for this edblogger. hmmm if I were to to try something like this.. I would need to buy a cellular phone first :)

Ernie Rothman's WebLOG

Ernie Rothman's WebLOG

A Cool Math Professor blog. He likes OSX... and loves his dogs.
I love the photo of Ernie grading papers with his Newfoundland Dog, Max.

He is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Mathematical Sciences Department at Salve Regina University, a small liberal arts college in Newport, RI.

I'm also a bit of a UNIX/computer geek and have lately been very active in the Mac OS X community. Most of my time in this area nowadays is spent co-authoring a book with Brian Jepson, entitled Mac OS X Panther for UNIX Geeks. This is a revised (for Panther aka Mac OS X 10.3) and expanded version of our 2002 book Mac OS X for UNIX Geeks. I also have a web site entitled A UNIX User's Mac OS X Notes devoted to porting UNIX-based applications and customizing the UNIX shell (i.e., Terminal application) environment on Mac OS X.

Sorry, He Loves OSX.

Citizen Scientist

Citizen Scientist :a clearinghouse of ideas for bringing science into the classroom

Very cool blog. A great About page on her philosophy on education.

One day, during my senior year of high school, my AP Biology teacher taught us how to extract DNA from an onion as part of a lab assignment. This exercise was one of many that helped me to realize that science was “do-able” and that I could play a role in a scientific world. Suddenly, science seemed “real”; it was more than a collection of facts on a page. If you can enable a student to see a subject or an event in a new light, that spark might continue to burn and lead them to pursue further inquiry.
